What is a Columbarium?
The Chapel of St Joseph is a Columbarium built in 2016 and is located in the basement of the Basilica of Regina Pacis. A Columbarium is a consecrated place of prayer where holy Masses are celebrated, prayers are offered, and meditation and reflection is encouraged. It is a place people go to pray for and visit the deceased.
Please take a minute to watch the video to the left which gives you a peaceful tour of the St. Joseph Columbarium. The atmosphere is very peaceful and graceful and is a serene location to permanently place the remains of yourself or your loved one in an urn. We encourage you to visit the Columbarium in person to see for yourself.
Along the wall of the St Joseph Chapel on both sides are what we call niches.
What is a Niche?
Along the walls of the St. Joseph Columbarium are niches. These are openings in the wall where you can place an urn that holds the ashes of a loved one for permanent memorialization. You can also engage in “pre-planning” and reserve a niche for yourself in the future.
We have a gift shop in the Columbarium in which you can purchase an urn for a loved one or for yourself. They came in all different shapes, sizes, and designs. Choose the one that fits you or your loved one best and then have it placed in a niche perpetually. By contacting us below, we will explain the whole process of reserving your niche including information on the different affordable prices we offer.
Please take a look at the image on the right to see an example of a wall full of separate niches located in the St. Joseph Chapel. These are the spots in which you place the urn.
Why Reserve a Niche?
Due to the high cost of cemetery burials and funerals in general, Monsignor Marino wanted to create a dignified affordable Catholic alternative. Catholic Cremations are becoming more and more popular every year and have reached an all time high.
As of August, 2017, the practice of Catholic Cremation has surpassed burial rates for the 2nd year in a row and the trend is rising as time goes on. Visit this article to read for yourself.
It is more graceful, more affordable, and more convenient for you or your loved ones to revisit your urn and niche at the St Joseph Chapel located in the Basilica of Regina Pacis. Use the contact form to the right or call Theresa Landy at 347-765-1088 ext. 1013 for more information about reserving your niche.
With the growing number of people who choose cremation as a final disposition after death, the ability to house these remains inside a Basilica is a beautiful idea.
